According to http://www.careerexplorer.com, “A bartender is someone who mixes and serves drinks to customers, either directly from patrons at the bar, or through waiters and waitresses who place drink orders for dining room customers. They must know a wide range of drink recipes and be able to mix drinks accurately, quickly, and without waste.”
I like to think of myself as a frustrated bartender. I think of making a cocktail as a science experiment. Its so much fun to combine flavors and essences to create a special refreshment. In this time of social distancing, I am not going to restaurants and I miss the social aspect of meeting a friend for a cocktail. Cocktail hour now consists of neighbors complying with the 6 feet rule, hanging out in beach chairs on their front lawns, enjoying a 5pm glass of wine or cocktail.
Here are two of my favorite cocktails:
The Clara Bow From Lynette Marrero’s Masterclass, “Teach Mixology”
- .5 oz Grenadine
- .5 oz St. Germaine Elderflower Liqueur
- 5 to 6 mint leaves, plus a mint sprig for garnish
- .75 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1.5 oz bourbon
- Combine all cocktail ingredients except for the mint sprig in a shaker
- Add 4 to 5 ice cubes and shake vigourously
- Using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer, pour the contents into a coup glass
- Garnish with a mint sprig
Margarita From The PDT Cocktail Book
- 2oz Tequila
- .75 oz Cointreau
- .75 oz lime juice
- .25 oz agave syrup
Shake with ice and strain into chilled rock glass filled with ice or a chilled coupe (optional salt rim). Garnish with a lime wheel. Refer to the links above for the shaker, strainer and glass that I like.
I highly recommend checking out the mixology class on www.masterclass.com It was very informative. I learned about different bar accessories and using bitters, herbs and spices to be creative when making a cocktail.
As for the PDT cocktail book, written by Jim Meehan, this is a must have for the amateur, at home, bartender. Meehan takes you behind the scenes of the famed NYC speakeasy. Once this social distancing/stay at home situation is over I hope to sit at the bar and have a libation….stay safe!
